Lessons from Trials in Jacob’s family<\/strong><\/p>\n

I. Plight<\/strong> of the trials<\/p>\n

a. Jacob – Gen. 42:36 — Circumstances<\/p>\n

i. Emotional<\/em>: Son he loved is “dead”; Simeon imprisoned, Benjamin taken
\nii. Practical<\/em>: Famine; unable to provide for family<\/p>\n

b. Brethren — Sin<\/p>\n

i. Emotional<\/em>: Felt unloved, neglected
\nii. Practical<\/em>: Not given dreams as Joseph<\/p>\n

c. Joseph — The World<\/p>\n

i. Emotional<\/em>: Hated, despised, forgotten
\nii. Practical<\/em>: Sold, imprisoned, mistreated<\/p>\n

II. Purpose<\/strong> of the trials<\/p>\n

a. Jacob-Gen. 45:27-28<\/p>\n

i. Must surrender<\/strong> his heart (dearest son) to the will & working of God
\nii. Learned<\/strong>: Goodness and greatness (sovereignty) of God
\niii. His view<\/strong>: “All these things are against me” How could things get worse?
\niv. God’s view: “Who can be against us?” How could things be better?<\/p>\n

b. Brethren – Gen 50:18-20<\/p>\n

i. Must surrender<\/strong> their wills to the chastisement\/correction of God
\nii. To learn<\/strong>: Government & grace of God
\niii. Their view<\/strong>: It’s hidden to man
\niv. God’s view: “All things… opened”<\/p>\n

c. Joseph<\/p>\n

i. Must surrender<\/strong> his life to the ways of God
\nii. Learned<\/strong>: Guidance (protection & provision) & Glory of God
\niii. Joseph’s view<\/strong>: Prison, humiliation
\niv. God’s view: Throne, exaltation & blessing<\/p>\n

III. Power<\/strong> for the trials<\/p>\n

a. Jacob-Rom. 8:28,31 “all things…for good”; “who can be against us?”<\/p>\n

i. Certainty<\/strong> of the past (calling, v32), present (in control of God, v31), future (crown, v32,39), Rom. 8:14-34
\nii. Comfort<\/strong> of the Scriptures, Son, Spirit, “God of all comfort”<\/p>\n

b. Brethren- Mark 7:37 “all things well”<\/p>\n

i. Care<\/strong> of Son\/Father, Rom. 8:35-39; Heb. 12:6<\/p>\n

c. Joseph-Rom 8:35-37 “all things…conquerors through Him that loved us”<\/p>\n

i. <\/strong>Christ<\/strong>, Rom. 8:35-39; Heb 2:18; Phil 4:13<\/p>\n

d. More “all things”: Matt 19:26, 2Cor 4:7-18; 1Cor 3:21,23<\/p>\n

e. God brings Sweet out of Bitter, Strength out of Weakness, Triumph out of Tragedy, Blessing out of Broken hearts (Jerry Jennings)<\/p>\n
